A shallow desktop aquarium with dimensions of 80cm x 15cm x 15cm (17 Litres) is a unique, long, and ultra-shallow setup. It provides a massive footprint for its volume, making it an incredible canvas for creative aquascaping, though it requires specific equipment and stocking choices due to the low depth.

Here is a comprehensive guide to maximizing the potential of this specific tank size.

Equipment Selection:

• Filtration: Use a small canister filter or a slim hang-on-back (HOB) filter. Ensure the intake pipe can be shortened to fit the 15cm depth. Point the outflow along the 80cm length to create a consistent river-like manifold flow.
• Heating: Standard heaters will not fit vertically. Opt for an inline heater attached to canister tubing, or a mini, flat aquarium heater placed horizontally hidden behind hardscape.
• Lighting: You need an 80cm slim LED fixture. Because the tank is only 15cm deep, light penetrates easily. Medium-intensity lights will act like high-intensity lights in this setup, so choose dimmable options to prevent algae.

Aquascaping Styles:

• Riverbed/Stream: Capitalize on the 80cm length. Use smooth river stones, gravel of cosmetic variances, and driftwood pointing in one direction to simulate a fast-flowing stream.
• Iwagumi: Use the rule of thirds with a main stone (Oyaishi) that slightly breaks the water surface, surrounded by smaller stones and a vast carpet of low-growing plants.
• Bonsai/Island: Build up a central mound of rocks and a bonsai driftwood tree in the middle third, letting the branches break out of the open top, leaving the sides completely open.

Plant Choices (Low Profile):

• Carpeting Plants: Dwarf hairgrass (Eleocharis acicularis), Monte Carlo, or Glossostigma. They will thrive due to the proximity of the light.
• Midground Mosses/Ferns: Fissidens moss, Mini Christmas moss, or Anubias nana petite wedged into rock crevices.
• Emersed Plants: Let Staurogyne repens, Ludwigia, or peace lilies grow up and out of the open top.

Stocking Ideas (Bioload Limit: Very Light):

• Invertebrates: A booming colony of Neocaridina shrimp (Cherry, Blue Dream) or Caridina shrimp. They love the massive floor footprint.
• Nano Schooling Fish: 6–8 Chili Rasboras (Boraras brigittae) or Ember Tetras. Their tiny size matches the scale of the tank perfectly.
• Bottom Dwellers: 6 Pygmy Corydoras. They will highly utilize the long 80cm runway.
• Warning: Avoid jumping fish like Bettas or Hatchetfish unless you have a custom tight-fitting lid, as the shallow water makes jumping easy.

Key Challenges:

• Evaporation: Shallow, open-top tanks lose water rapidly. A small auto-top-off (ATO) system is highly recommended to keep salinity and water levels stable.
• Vertical Space: High-growing stem plants will bend over quickly. Stick to foreground plants or species you intend to let grow out of the water.
