Microsorum pteropus ‘Trident’ (commonly known as Trident Java Fern) is a highly popular, slow-growing epiphyte variety of the classic Java Fern. It is distinguished by its unique, multi-lobed leaves that typically split into 2 to 5 narrow, fork-like segments on each side, giving it a delicate and airy appearance.

Key Characteristics & Requirements:

  • Growth Habit: A slow-growing, highly versatile aquatic fern that reaches up to 15–30 cm in height.
  • Difficulty: Very easy and safe for beginners, yet prized by advanced aquascapers for its texture.
  • Placement: Ideal for midground placement, nano tanks, or attaching directly to hardscape.
  • Lighting: Thrives in low-to-medium light, making it perfect for low-tech tanks.
  • Water Parameters: Adaptable to a wide temperature range (4–30°C) and pH values of 5.0–7.5.
  • Nutrient Uptake: Feeds directly through its leaves and roots from the water column rather than the soil.

Planting and Care Instructions:

  • Avoid Substrate Burial
    • Never bury the horizontal green stalk (rhizome) in aquarium gravel or soil. Covering the rhizome cuts off water flow and causes oxygen deprivation, which makes the plant rot and die.
  • Securing to Hardscape
    • Attach the plant directly to aquarium driftwood, spiderwood, or rocks. You can securely anchor it using fishing line, cotton thread, zip ties, or a few drops of cyanoacrylate-based gel superglue.
  • Maintenance and Pruning
    • Regularly trim older or browning leaves with sharp scissors right at the rhizome. This promotes healthier, bushier growth and keeps your aquascape looking clean. Supplement the tank occasionally with a quality liquid fertilizer to provide essential nutrients.
  • Easy Propagation
    • Trident Fern propagates naturally by growing miniature daughter plants right on its leaf tips. Once these plantlets develop tiny roots, gently pull them off to tie them elsewhere, or slice the main rhizome into sections to create entirely new plants.
