Pogostemon stellatus (historically known as Eusteralis stellata) is a highly striking, perennial aquatic stem plant native to East and Southeast Asia, northern Australia, and the Indian subcontinent. Prized in the aquascaping hobby for its vibrant colouration and unique whorled leaf structures, it is commonly used as a dense background or midground visual anchor.

Optimal Aquarium Care Parameters:
- Lighting: Intensive / High (can tolerate medium)
- CO₂ Injection: Mandatory for dense, colourful growth, grows faster/thicker with CO₂
- Water Hardness: Very adaptable, prefers soft water
- pH Range: 5.0 – 7.0
- Temperature: 20°C to 28°C
- Nutrients: Benefits from liquid fertilisers or nutrient-rich substrate
Growth & Maintenance Tips:
- Nutrient Deficiencies: If the leaves turn pale, translucent, or white, the plant is starving for micronutrients, nitrate, or iron. Ensure regular dosing with a comprehensive liquid fertiliser.
- Shedding Lower Leaves: If the lower portion of the stem becomes bare and stalky, it is a sign that the bottom leaves are not getting enough light. Space the stems out when planting or increase your light intensity.
- Sudden Stalling: Even in pristine conditions, standard Pogostemon stellatus can randomly stop growing. If this happens, trimming the top and letting side shoots take over typically re-establishes healthy growth.
Propagation:
Propagating this plant is exceptionally straightforward. Simply use aquascaping scissors to cut the stem right between the leaf nodes. Strip the lowest set of leaves and push the clipping into the substrate using tweezers. The cut base left behind in the soil will split and produce two or more new offshoots, creating a much bushier presentation.
