“Java Fern Narrow Leaf Red” refers to a specific, attractive variety of Microsorum pteropus, characterized by its slender leaves that develop subtle reddish or pink hues, especially with good lighting, contrasting with its typically narrow, flowing green foliage, making it great for aquascapes but requiring it to be attached to decor, not buried. It’s a hardy, low-to-medium light plant, ideal for beginners, but thrives with water column fertilization and proper attachment to rocks or driftwood.

Care & Maintenance
  • Lighting: Low to moderate light.
  • Substrate: Attach to driftwood or rocks; do not bury the rhizome (the thick horizontal stem) in the substrate, or it will rot.
  • Nutrients: Absorbs nutrients from the water column; a complete liquid fertilizer helps.
  • Water: Tolerates a wide range of parameters but prefers 18-28°C (64-82°F) and neutral pH.
  • Transition: May “melt” (lose leaves) when first submerged, but new, adapted leaves will grow.
Common Issues
  • Melting: Normal after planting; new growth will emerge.
  • Red/Orange Leaves: Can indicate overly acidic water (pH < 6) or nutrient issues.
  • Black Spots: Often baby plants growing on the underside
