Rotala rotundifolia is a highly popular, fast-growing aquatic stem plant native to Southeast Asia, widely used in the aquascaping hobby. While its Latin name translates to “the plant with the round leaves,” this characteristic only applies to its marsh-grown (emersed) form. Once fully submerged in an aquarium, the leaves transform into a long, narrow, and delicate lanceolate shape.

Core Characteristics & Requirements:

• Growth Placement: Best suited for the mid-ground or background where it can form a dense, bushy wall or hedge.
• Lighting: Low to high. Under standard or lower lighting, it stays lime green; intensive lighting triggers vibrant shades of pink, orange, or deep red.
• CO₂ and Nutrients: Low demand. It survives well in low-tech setups, but supplemental carbon dioxide and iron fertilization drastically improve its colour intensity and branching density.
• Trimming & Maintenance: Frequent pruning is required. Cutting the tops forces the plant to send out massive side shoots, creating a lush, compact look.

How to Plant and Propagate:
