The South African shrimp hobby is growing in a positive way. Saturn Shrimp and Aquascaping is planning a local ornamental shrimp competition for the shrimp keepers to motivate the quality and improvement of shrimp in South Africa.
The focus of the shrimp competition is to create excitement and a goal driven hobby. Currently there are a lot of shrimp keepers in South Africa who breed, but we would like to encourage more keepers who breed quality shrimps, understand bloodlines and also boost the hobbies expertise.

The entered shrimp must be adult in size and for best placing look identical to each other. 1 Male and 3 Female shrimps will be judged out of the 6 entered shrimp. All shrimp are available to auction off at the event, if the participant chooses to, and 50% of profits will be kept by the event and 50% paid to the person who entered.

There will be 10 categories for the event. Best Neocaridina Red, Best Neocaridina Blue, Best Neocaridina Any/Invention, Best Crystal Line Red/Black, Best Caridina – Any, Best Taiwan Bee – Any, Best Blue Bolt, Best Red Pinto Shrimp, Best Black Pinto Shrimp, Best BOA Shrimp.

International judging and professional venue in Centurion, Gauteng

The event will be open to the public to view shrimps and participate throughout the day. Auction of entered shrimps will be at 14h00.

Each person who enters must bring the entered shrimp to the competition on Friday 5 February 2026 (17h00 – 19h00) or Saturday 6 February 2026 (08h00 – 10h00)

We welcome Dennerle South Africa as our main sponsor for the event. There will be a Dennerle shop at the event and plenty of prizes* up for grabs for the participants and those who come to the event.

Acclimation of your shrimp:

We use the rule of three (3)

One part is their water that we send them in and 2 parts is your tank water.

Drip Acclimation Tools:

Small tupperware bowl or something similar
Plastic cup or aquarium airline hose
Scissors
Shrimp or fish net
Airline tubing

Removing Shrimp from the Bag:

If you received your shrimp in a breather bag you’ll want to place the bag directly inside the tupperware. Make sure to not pour the shrimp out because they may get stuck inside the bag.

With your scissors, cut the side of the bag, starting from the top. This will let the water pour out the bag and the bag will remain inside the bowl with the shrimp.
Carefully remove the shrimp that remained behind in the bag. You can also dip the bag in the water to achieve this.
Your shrimp should now be inside the tupperware.

Using airline tubing to acclimate:

Allow water to drip into the tupperware with shrimp at 2 – 3 drops per second. Apply the rule of 3 here, One part existing water from shrimp bag and 2 parts your existing tank water. Dripping should take 1 hour to complete. We believe that dripping shrimp for hours on end creates more stress and can harm your newly purchased critters.
Once the water in the tupperware is mainly tank water you can safely introduce your shrimp to your tank.
We have had a 100% success rate with the above method.
