Brand:

The Iresine sp. Bloodleaf is a striking terra plant from the amaranth family (Amaranthaceae). This makes it an especially good choice for humid, tropical setups. Its natural relatives come from the warm, moist habitats of Central and South America. There, they thrive best in filtered light and loose, nutrient-rich soil. Thanks to its intense, vivid burgundy-red foliage, it is an excellent contrast plant for a terrarium, paludarium, or florarium.

Its leaves are oval, slightly pointed, and smooth-surfaced, with a deep reddish-burgundy color. Often, these are marked by brighter veins. Its growth habit is mostly compact and bushy, so it can be easily placed even in smaller and medium-sized planted compositions. Under suitable conditions, it can reach a height of 15–30 cm. With regular pinching back, it can be encouraged to grow even denser and more shapely. Its colorful foliage stands out especially well in the foreground. It also works well as a focal point in the midground.

For Iresine sp. Bloodleaf, medium or strong light is ideal. This is the only way to maintain truly intense leaf coloration and dense growth. It prefers medium to high humidity, so it shows its best form in a more enclosed environment with a stable climate. Its temperature needs are tropical: it develops evenly between 20–28 °C. Its care requires moderate attention, as it may be sensitive to drying out and to persistently dry air.

For planting, a loose-structured soil with good water retention yet good aeration is recommended. The medium should remain slightly moist, but should not stay waterlogged for long periods. Dennerle Terra plants are grown in a special coconut fiber-based medium, which is a clean and practical solution. It can be planted directly into the soil, and removal is not necessary. This makes handling and planting especially simple. It is most commonly propagated from stem cuttings and, with proper humidity, does so relatively easily.
