Cryptocoryne tonkinensis is a unique, elegant aquatic plant native to northern Vietnam and southern China. Unlike traditional Cryptocoryne species that feature broad leaves, this variety stands out with its exceptionally long, thin, grass-like leaves, making it highly desirable for creating a soft, flowing texture in aquascapes.

Plant Profile & Appearance:
- Distinctive foliage: Features narrow, straw-like leaves that range from 0.3 cm to 1.3 cm in width.
- Coloration: Displays shades from bright grass-green to deep reddish-brown, depending heavily on light intensity and tank nutrients.
- Growth habit: Rosette-style, slow-growing plant that spreads via creeping underground rhizomes.
- Tank placement: Ideally suited for the foreground or midground in larger aquariums, or as a background plant in nano setups.
Aquarium Care Requirements:
This plant is relatively hardy and adaptable, making it beginner-friendly while remaining a prized item for advanced collectors.
- Water Temperature: 20°C to 28°C
- pH Range: 6.0 to 7.5
- Water Hardness: 2 to 12 dGH
- Lighting: Adapts well to low or moderate light, but can tolerate higher light to bring out richer reddish hues.
- Substrate & Nutrients: It is a heavy root feeder. It thrives best in a high-quality nutrient substrate or when boosted with root tabs.
- CO₂ Injection: Not strictly required, though it will significantly improve growth density and colour depth.
Important Aquascaping Tips:
- Avoid relocation: Like most crypts, Cryptocoryne tonkinensi dislikes being moved once planted. Keep it in a permanent spot to avoid stunting its growth.
- Expect the “Crypt Melt”: When introduced to a new aquarium or exposed to sudden parameter shifts, the plant may drop its leaves. Do not panic or throw it away; leave the root structure intact, and it will eventually grow stronger leaves acclimated to your water.
