The Green Moscow Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a highly sought-after, selectively bred fancy guppy variant prized for its solid, deep metallic emerald green and blue iridescence that completely saturates its body and flowing fins. The Green Moscow Guppy Trio is especially popular among hobbyists for breeding and display tanks. In fact, many aquarists prefer to keep the Green Moscow Guppy Trio due to their striking appearance and breeding potential.

Distinctive Features:

  • Solid Coloration: True Moscow strains are distinct because they express a block color across the entire body, completely lacking individual spot patterns. The uniform coloration makes the Green Moscow Guppy Trio stand out in any aquarium.
  • Color Shifting: The green tone is actually a genetic combination of a dark blue base layer overlaid with dense yellow color cells. Under different lighting conditions, they drastically shift between looking deep emerald green, navy blue, or metallic silver.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Males are smaller (4 to 6 cm) but display intense metallic coloration and large, flowing caudal and dorsal fins. Females are larger, rounder, and typically show muted colors.

Aquarium Care Parameters:

Green Moscow Guppies are hardy, peaceful, and beginner-friendly livebearers. Because of these qualities, the Green Moscow Guppy Trio is an excellent choice for both novice and experienced aquarists.

  • Minimum Tank Size: 40 Litres.
  • Temperature: 22°C – 28°C.
  • Water pH: 6,2 – 8.0
  • Social Dynamics: Keep them in groups of 6 or more. If keeping a mixed-sex tank, maintain a ratio of 1 male to 2–3 females to minimize stress on the females.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a heavily planted environment (like tall stem plants) to offer resting spaces, use a low-flow filter to avoid tiring their large fins, and use a secure tank lid as they are prone to jumping. Therefore, many hobbyists recommend this setup particularly for the Green Moscow Guppy Trio.
  • Diet: Omnivorous. Feed high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and occasional live/frozen treats like brine shrimp to enhance their iridescent green coloration.

Tank Compatibility:

  • Ideal Mates: Small, peaceful community fish such as Tetras, Rasboras, Corydoras catfish, and peaceful shrimp.
  • Avoid: Fin-nippers (like Tiger Barbs) or large, aggressive species that will easily damage the guppies’ delicate, flowing tails.
