The Pea Puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus), affectionately known in the aquarium hobby as the “murder bean,” is the world’s smallest freshwater pufferfish, reaching a maximum size of only 2.5 to 3.5 cm. Despite their tiny scale, they are highly intelligent, fiercely territorial, and packed with an enormous, inquisitive personality.

Essential Tank Setup:

• Heavily Planted Environment: Use a high volume of live plants, driftwood, and rocks. Creating multiple sightline breaks is mandatory to disperse territorial aggression.
• Sand Substrate: A smooth sand bed is recommended. Pea puffers may try to dart down into or bury themselves in the substrate if startled, and rough gravel can injure them.
• Gentle Filtration: They are weak swimmers and dislike strong currents. A high-quality sponge filter or a baffled filter with a gentle flow is ideal.
• Pristine Water Quality: Because they are scaleless, they are incredibly sensitive to ammonia and nitrites. The tank must be completely cycled before adding them, with nitrates kept below 20 ppm.

Diet and Feeding:

Pea puffers will refuse dry flakes or pellets. They must be fed a varied diet of live or frozen proteins:

• Pest Snails: Ramshorn, bladder, and pond snails are excellent for stimulating natural hunting behaviors. Unlike larger puffers, their teeth rarely overgrow to a dangerous point, but crunchy shells offer great enrichment.
• Live/Frozen Foods: Feed daily meals of bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and blackworms.

Social Structure & Tank Mates:

Pea puffers are unique because they are shoaling fish in the wild and do best in a group of 6 or more to distribute aggression naturally. Keep a ratio of one male to two or three females, as males are exceptionally territorial.

Because of their fin-nipping tendencies, a species-only tank is highly recommended. If you choose to keep them in a larger community tank (75L+), select carefully:

• Good Choices: Otocinclus catfish (nearly 100% safe), Kuhli loaches, and fast-moving nano schoolers like Chili Rasboras.
• Avoid: Slow, long-finned fish like Bettas or Guppies, and slow-moving bottom dwellers which will get picked on out of curiosity. Smaller ornamental shrimp will quickly become expensive snacks.
