Mopani wood is a dense, exceptionally heavy African hardwood (from the Colophospermum mopane tree) prized by aquarists for its sculptural form and dual-tone colours. Sold by the kilogram, its high density allows it to sink rapidly without needing prolonged soaking.

Key Characteristics & Benefits
- Visual Appeal: Features a striking contrast between dark, deep-brown heartwood and paler, sandy sapwood. Each piece is naturally unique with gnarled knots and sweeping textures, making it ideal as a tank centerpiece.
- No Pre-Soaking Required: Unlike lighter woods (like spider wood), Mopani’s high specific gravity (around 0.98 to 1.4) means it stays submerged right out of the box.
- Water Conditioning: It is rich in natural tannins, which gradually leach into the water. This slightly lowers the pH, softens the water, and creates a natural “blackwater” tint preferred by many tropical fish.
- Durability: Because it is an extremely hard wood, it degrades very slowly and provides a long-lasting habitat that supports beneficial biofilm.
*Please note: Running Seachem Purigen – 100ml will assist in the removal of tannins in your aquarium.
