The White Cloud Mountain Minnow (Tanichthys albonubes) is an exceptionally hardy, peaceful, and vibrant nano freshwater fish. Affectionately nicknamed the “poor man’s neon tetra,” it is a favorite for both beginner and advanced hobbyists. They are natively from the cool streams of the White Cloud Mountain region in Guangdong, China. Because they thrive in cooler water, they are perfect for unheated indoor aquariums or outdoor patio ponds.

• Maximum Size: They grow up to 4 cm long.
• Lifespan: They live 3 to 7 years with good care.
• Coloration: Shimmering bronze-brown body with a bright, iridescent neon line spanning from eye to tail. Their dorsal and anal fins are brilliantly tipped in red and white.
• Variants: Popular captive-bred varieties include the Golden White Cloud (yellow-gold body) and the Meteor Minnow (long, flowing fins).
• Conservation: They are practically extinct or highly endangered in their original wild habitats due to pollution and tourism. Virtually all fish in the trade are sustainably bred in captivity.

Tank Setup and Water Parameters:

White Cloud Mountain Minnows are highly adaptable but thrive best when their natural stream environments are replicated:

• Minimum Tank Size: Approximately 40–60 liters to accommodate a proper school.
• Temperature: 14°C to 22°C is ideal. They prefer cooler water; sustained temperatures above 23°C can shorten their lifespan.
• Water Chemistry: pH range of 6.0 to 8.5, and water hardness between 5 to 19° dH.
• Decor: Provide a dark substrate, moderate water flow, and dense vegetation (like Rotala or Hornwort) alongside open swimming space.

Behavior and Tank Mates:

They are obligate schooling fish and must be kept in groups of at least 6 to 8 individuals. Larger schools reduce stress and bring out their brightest colors.

Males will periodically “spar” by flaring their fins at one another to show dominance or attract mates, which is a highly entertaining, non-lethal behavior. They are exceptionally peaceful and make great companions for other sub-tropical or cool-water species like Zebra Danios, Hillstream Loaches, Corydoras catfish, and Cherry Shrimp. Avoid housing them with large fish like adult goldfish, which will easily swallow them.

Diet and Feeding:

White Clouds are undemanding omnivores. They have upturned mouths designed to feed at the top and middle of the water column. Feed them a varied diet of high-quality micro-pellets, crushed flakes, and occasional live or frozen treats like baby brine shrimp, Daphnia, and Cyclops.
