Species Overview & Care:

Originally derived from the German Blue Ram native to the Orinoco River Basin in South America, this color morph behaves similarly but is notoriously sensitive to water quality and demands specific parameters to thrive:

  • Size & Lifespan: They grow to about 5–7.5 cm and typically live for 2–4 years.
  • Water Temperature: They require exceptionally warm water, ideally kept between 26°C and 30°C. They can easily live well in cooler temperatures of a planted aquarium.
  • pH & Hardness: They thrive in soft, acidic water with a pH of 5.5–7.0 and low general hardness (GH).
  • Tank Setup: A minimum of 60 to 120 litres is recommended. They prefer slow-moving water, a fine sandy substrate, and plenty of driftwood or plants to create natural lines of sight and hiding spots.
  • Temperament: They are peaceful community fish but can become mildly territorial toward their own kind when forming breeding pairs.
