Rotala sp. “Nanjenshan” is a delicate, fine-leaved aquatic plant native to Taiwan. It is widely believed to be a natural hybrid between Rotala rotundifolia and Rotala wallichii. Highly prized in aquascaping for its soft, needle-like foliage, it forms dense, bushy clusters that make an excellent midground to background focal point.

Key Characteristics

• Appearance: Features millimeter-thick, linear green leaves growing in tight whorls. It is often referred to as “Green Wallichii”.
• Coloration: Primarily bright light green to yellowish-green. Under intense lighting and high iron levels, the shoot tips develop beautiful reddish, pink, or orange hues.
• Growth Habit: Fast-growing and naturally bushy. Under strong light, the lateral shoots tend to arch downward, creating a unique overhanging effect.
• Fragility: The stems and leaves are exceptionally thin and delicate. It should not be housed with large or overly disruptive fish that might tear the foliage.

Aquascaping & Maintenance

• Placement: Best planted in large groups in the midground or background. It creates a stunning visual contrast when placed behind hardscape or broad-leaved species like Cryptocorynes.
• Trimming: Respond exceptionally well to regular pruning. Trimming the tops forces the plant to push out numerous lateral shoots, creating an incredibly dense, carpet-like bush.
• Propagation: Simply cut healthy stem tops or lateral shoots with sharp aquascaping scissors and replant them back into a nutrient-rich substrate.
