Brand:

Pogostemon deccanensis (previously widely known in the aquarium hobby as Pogostemon erectus) is a highly popular, bright green aquatic stem plant native to the wetlands of southwestern India. It is highly prized in aquascaping for its distinct needle-like leaves, which give it a unique conifer or pine-like appearance.

Plant Overview:

  • Placement: Ideal as a background plant, or a midground focal point in larger tanks due to its strict vertical growth.
  • Appearance: Forms dense, compact groupings of vivid green stems. Under intense light, the leaf tips can develop a warm, gold-yellow hue.
  • Size: Stems typically grow between 15 to 40 cm tall and 1 to 3 cm wide.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate. It does not grow as overwhelmingly fast as some other stem plants, making it easier to manage.

Optimal Growth Requirements:

  • Lighting: Medium to high. Stronger light ensures the plant remains compact and bushy rather than leggy.
  • CO₂ Injection: Highly recommended (20–30 mg/L) to maintain dense growth and prevent stunting.
  • Substrate & Nutrients: It develops a massive, vigorous root system. It thrives best in nutrient-rich aquarium soil or with regular root tab supplementation.
  • Water Hardness: Soft to medium is ideal. Tip: If grown in hard water, it is prone to stunting if the water column is heavily fertilized; keep water column dosing lean and rely more on root feeding in hard water setups.
  • Temperature: 20°C to 30°C.
  • pH Range: 5.0 to 8.0.

Pruning and Propagation:

Because it grows in a neat, vertical configuration, aligning the tops through trimming is very easy. Regular topping encourages the lower part of the plant to throw out multiple side shoots, creating an ultra-dense forest effect.
To propagate, simply cut off the healthy top shoots, strip the lower leaves from the stem, and plant them back into the substrate.

Emersed Growth & Flowering:

If grown emersed (above water) in high-humidity setups like paludariums, Wabi-Kusa, or open-top aquariums, Pogostemon deccanensis transforms its leaf structure and produces beautiful, plume-shaped purple flowers that look similar to cat’s tails.
