Crinum calamistratum (commonly known as the narrow crinum or African onion plant) is a highly unique, slow-growing bulbous aquatic plant native to Cameroon, West Africa. Belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family (the same family as daffodils and amaryllis), it is prized in the aquascaping hobby for its exceptionally dark green, heavily crinkled, and ribbon-like curly leaves.

Core Plant Profile:

  • Scientific Name: Crinum calamistratum
  • Common Names: Narrow Crinum, African Onion Plant
  • Origin: Cameroon, West Africa (slow-moving freshwater rivers)
  • Growth Rate: Extremely slow
  • Max Leaf Length: 40 to 120 cm (can sometimes exceed 200 cm in optimal settings)
  • Placement: Centerpiece, midground, or background

Aquarium Care & Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: Thrives between 20°C and 28°C.
  • Water pH: Adaptable to a wide range from 6.0 to 8.0.
  • Water Hardness: Prefers soft to moderately hard water (0 to 18°dGH).
  • Lighting: Requires low to moderate lighting. Intense, direct light does not benefit this slow grower and often encourages unwanted brush or hair algae to form on its stiff, textured leaves.
  • CO₂ Supplementation: Not mandatory, though it will grow with better vigor in high-tech setups featuring pressurized carbon dioxide.
  • Water Flow: Enjoys gentle, steady water movement. Positioning it near a filter outflow encourages the leaves to wave gracefully and promotes healthy nutrient intake.

Planting & Substrate Requirements:

  • Nutrient-Rich Base: This plant is a heavy root feeder and relies heavily on a mature bulb. It performs best in a nutrient-dense aquasoil or gravel supplemented with root tabs.
  • Expose the Bulb: When planting, do not bury the entire bulb. Press only the roots and the very bottom base of the bulb into the substrate, leaving the upper half fully exposed to the water column. Burying the bulb completely will cut off oxygen and cause it to rot and die.
  • Leave it Undisturbed: Crinum species have extensive, deep root networks and absolutely hate being moved. Choose a permanent location in your aquascape; uprooting or shifting the plant will shock it, leading to a long recovery period or leaf melt.

Propagation & Maintenance:

Because it rarely reproduces sexually through seeds in home aquariums, propagation is achieved primarily through asexual bulb offsets. As the main plant thrives, it will naturally form miniature “daughter” bulbs alongside the parent base. Allow these small pups to grow a self-sustaining root system of their own before gently detaching them to plant elsewhere.
